  • How can a Geneseo, IL veterans’ benefits lawyer help me?

What Types of Veterans’ Benefits are Available?

Many different kinds of veteran’s benefits are available to provide both for veterans and for their family members. Healthcare, of course, is one important type of benefit which can matter a great deal to veterans who have increasing health issues as they age or who develop a serious medical condition that requires ongoing or costly treatment.

For veterans who are receiving a pension, the monthly income they receive may not be enough to cover the costs of nursing home care or residential home care. Aid & Attendance (A&A) provides a boost to pension income in recognition of the higher costs faced by veterans who are bedridden or who require more extensive care. For those who are eligible, A&A will increase monthly pensions to help defray some of the expenses which are so often associated with the increased care necessary for aging vets.

In many cases, family members will provide care for veterans who are getting older. Spouses or other home caregivers can face substantial stress, and caregiver respite programs provide some relief. These are also available through the VA to allow caregivers time to get their own personal needs met, to run errands, or simply to take a break from the ongoing needs of a dependent patient who they are providing assistance to.

These are just a few of many different veterans’ benefits programs available. From adult daycare to medical foster homes to community based residential care settings and VA nursing homes, there are myriad programs which are aimed at meeting the special needs of senior vets. Eligibility varies depending upon current medical needs, income levels, and service records, but exploring the different programs is worthwhile for everyone.

When Should I Get help with Veterans’ Benefits?

Too many veterans are not aware of the different programs which are designed to help them and their families as they develop new needs during the aging process. If you have a health issue, if you are beginning to require more medical care, or if you are in need of nursing home care or any senior health services, you should explore whether there is a veterans’ benefits program which may be able to defray the cost or even provide you entirely with what you need.

Navigating the bureaucracy is difficult, and actually qualifying for benefits can be time consuming, so you should act as quickly as possible to begin exploring the programs available to you when you or your family members develop any medical or age-related conditions. With help from an attorney, you can find all programs you qualify for in your area and can get the application process underway.
