Estate planning attorneys can tell people over and over again that they need to get an estate plan, or at least a Will. However, most people do not listen as surveys reveal that most Americans do not have a Will. We could give you reasons that you need a Will, but the best thing might be to offer real world famous examples of people who did not have a Will and what happened as a result.
Jimi Hendrix did not have a Will when he passed away. Most people believe that he would have wanted his estate to go to his brother, with whom Hendrix was close. However, state law dictated that his father got his entire estate. His father later left everything to an adopted daughter from a subsequent marriage that Hendrix did not know.
Author Stieg Larsson did not have a Will either. He did have girlfriend of 32 years who received none of his estate. Instead, everything went to Larsson’s father and brother.
Those are just two famous, recent examples of people who passed away without a Will. Their wishes were not fulfilled. Do not let the same thing happen to you.
